I'm a Scale Whore

Yes.  It's true. I'm a card carrying member of the Scale Whore Society.  {{hangs head in shame}}

Perhaps you're a member too?  We're a fun group of whores, just don't take away our precious scales!
I step up onto that scale first thing each and every morning.  Of course, when I do, I'm nakie AND after a visit to the loo...oops, that was an over-share.  But it is my standard morning routine.  I've been doing it for almost two years now.

I use each morning's weigh-in as a gauge of how I'm doing with my food choices and exercise.

Want to know something that is totally crazytown? If I don't find time to exercise for a few days the weight on the scale goes DOWN because I lose muscle....and since I'm in a sharing mood, I may or may not use this to my advantage on a rare Friday weigh-in....shhhhh...don't tell anyone mmmkay?  It's our little secret.

Lately, I've seen some bandsters have been having a no scale month. Yes, an ENTIRE MONTH. Our lovely Amy took a break from the scale in July.  Now, I see that my Jazzercise buddy Beth Ann is having a "no scale August."  I am thoroughly impressed.  How do these ladies do it?

There's no way in a million gazillion years that I would or could take a break from the scale when I was losing. I was on a mission to lose....and damn it, I had that spreadsheet to fill out.

I wonder if I could take a break from the scale for the month of September?

Where could I hide my scale so I don't stand on it every morning? The trunk of my car? No, that wouldn't work...I would take the scale out of the trunk and there'd I be...just be standing on the scale, nakie in the garage....yikes...wouldn't want to scare the neighbors.

Those of you who have taken a break from the scale, where do you hide your scale? OR are you super disciplined and can walk past it without giving in to the temptation to stand on it? Enquiring minds want to know.

  1. I actually had my husband hide it on me once and then the other time I found that if I just put it somewhere out of my eyesight first thing in the morning then I would kinda forget about it.

I hate the power my scale has over me, when I'm doing well it really helps but when I'm not doing well it really messes with my mind.

  2. I decided to take a break this month as well. Beth gave me the great idea! I have been like you, scale obsessed! In the morning after the daily potty release and sometimes after a poop and then every time after the gym...
I honestly look at the scale every morning and yearn to get on it but don't. It makes me realize just how sale crazy I was! I was going to move it but my hubby uses it every day as well.
I did this mostly because I noticed I would use a down weight to eat just that little extra and sabotage myself. This way I am paranoid about a gain and work out how I’m supposed to and eat right :)

  3. Hello my name is Brenda and I am a scale whore. If you print up cards will you send me one? Do you think we need to pre-warn the medics of our condition? Maybe an I.D. bracelet? Hmmmmm....jewelry. See, being a scale whore can have its perks. Great post. Very funny.

  4. I am a card carrying scale whore club member!!! No way could I go a month, and I wouldn't want to!!! When I was over 200 lbs I NEVER weighed myself, one month would turn into two and poof back to the start..... No thank you!!!!
We should have a patch, or a secret handshake.... Lol

  6. I totally agree with Karla and freely admit that I am indeed a scale whore. Unless my scale breaks or the battery dies, I will continue to weight "almost" every day. It is a tool just as weighing and measuring my food. No need to take a break. :)

  7. Once a day is enough for me. In fact if I forget to weigh before I have my coffee, I skip it for that day and wait until the next. Don't want a false reading, don't you know. :)

  8. It has only been a few days, so I'm not all that impressed with myself yet. :) I literally gave my scale to my friend to hold for me for the month. I KNEW I would not be able to not weigh myself if it was there.

Everyone is different and their needs/wants are different. I know that I was using the scale to make bad decisions. Weighing yourself to find out how much you weigh=healthy. Weighing yourself to justify whether you should eat 1/2 package of cookie dough=not so much. (Not that I would ever do that, of course...)

I just need to develop healthier habits and saying I'm only going to weigh once a week, just wouldn't do it for me. I don't think that the scale is out of my life forever, but I hope by seeing that I can live without it...I can have a better relationship with it in the future.

I will keep you posted!! As always, I will be reading to see what you decide. :)

  9. Looks of disgust come across my face every time I step foot on that flat chested demon. I kinda (little wishy-washy on this one) think I need to take a break too. But I haven't moved it out of the bathroom yet. But I didn't get on it this morning! Yeah for small victories.

But I highly doubt that 'will-power' will stick around for more than 2 days. Maybe I shall put in the downstairs bathroom. I never enter it....it's my man's secret hide-out.

  10. I'm a total S.W. and have no plans to change that! It's one of the most important parts of maintenance for me. It's only by keeping myself regularly accountable for the number that appears on the scale that I'm able to nip small gains in the bud and stay within a few-pound range. No scale break for me!

  12. I am a newly converted SW. In the past, failing to weigh in meant I was in denial. Now that I am committed to getting fit, I have to weigh everyday so I can keep on track.

  13. I'm a once a week kinda gal. I feel my relationship is relatively healthy though I do let it dictate my moods at least for about an hour or so. I'm ok with that though!

  14. I'm a weight myself multiple times daily kinda a gal (and have been almost 2 years now). Does that make me an "overacheiver" in the scale whore club? LOL.

  16. I am also a scale whore. I recognize the advantage of weighing myself daily....to keep tabs on my progress and to show me my mistakes. I do not feel wierd by weighing myself daily anymore. I, like others, ignored the scale for too long and ended up gaining little by little till I was almost 300. I never wanna be like that again.
