I Has a Sad

I went into this journey with the Lap Band for the sole reason of improving my health and more specifically to resolve my high blood pressure.

So I was so happy in April of 2010 (6 months post op), my doctor took me off both of my high blood pressure meds.  Success!!  YAY!

Unfortunately, the blood pressure is starting to creep up again.  At my primary care doctor appointment yesterday, they took two readings and both times it was in the 150s over 90s.  Sigh.

I will continue to check it every day at home with my blood pressure cuff and go back to the doctor to reassess in three weeks.   The cuff at home is reporting high readings as well.  Double sigh.

Will I have to go back on medication?  I hope not.

I can't help but wonder if being obese for 20+ years already did some irreversible damage in regards to my blood pressure?

  1. Try eating lots of potassium-rich foods. Avocados are my favorite, but bananas are good too. I hope it resolves soon!

  3. Don't blame yourself. Well before I ever had an obesity problem, I had high blood pressure. It started in my very early twenties. It comes and goes, that's the funny thing. I'll go on meds and then my BP will get too low, so I get pulled off the meds---like I was last November and my insurance company used it against me. Then it'll go back up---like it did recently (despite losing 35 pounds). Now my doc is planning on putting me back on meds as soon as my stomach heals. There's no reason to blame yourself. There are MANY reasons people have high BP, most are unknown though. The important thing is that you've lost weight. Obesity definitely complicates high BP and makes it more dangerous. So at least you're normal weight now, that's the best thing you can do for yourself.

  4. You have achieved an AMAZING goal (surpassed it at that)! This is just a bump in the road! Lee Ann is right there are many underlying reasong for a high BP! Keep you chin up!

  5. Oh hon, I'm sure even if you do have to go back on, like LeeAnn said, it may not be a constant thing and I'm certain that it doesn't have anything (or much anyway) to do with your years overweight. Please keep us posted. My thoughts are with you.

  6. Sometimes it's a hereditary thing and no amount of diet and exercise will completely get rid of it. I'm glad you can check it yourself. Hope it resolves itself. :)

I wish I had some good suggetions to help you lower it. I always heard exercise and you are already doing that. Maybe meditation? Please don't blame yourself for this. You are doing so many wonderful things for your health and encouraging others too. This is just a little bump in the road.

  8. Hope it gets better for you. Sometimes I think doctors blame obesity on everything, when even slim ppl can have health probs too. Hopefully it will calm down on its own. Have you been really stressed or something?

  9. Don't read to much into this, which can raise your pressure too. As others have said there are many reasons to have higher blood pressures, some of which you can't help, or fix. Let your doctor find out the what and why and the how to fix it. Chin up my friend you have accomplished much!!!!!

  10. If there's one thing I've learned working in the cardiology field, it's that sometimes you just can't do a damn thing about it. Blood pressure problems are often just part of your genetics, and that's that. I'm right there with you!

  11. My doctor took me off one of my blood pressure meds (I was taking 2) after a gradual decrease in the amount and this Friday - after a reading of 112 over 64 told me to stop taking it - and to come back in three weeks to see how I was doing but he said he thought he would keep me on the Vasotec 10 gm (I have been taking meds since I was 40 - which is over 22 years) as he thought this would help with the function of my heart and kidneys! I hope that you do not have to go back on your meds -
