What I Should Have Asked Santa For...

A spreadsheet.

Yep.

Don't roll your eyes at me.

Seriously....I want a Biggest Loser spreadsheet.  It would look like this:

I don't need contestant names, that's not what I'm after.

I want some data on long term maintenance of the contestants' weight loss.

Using my pretty sketchy math skills, I guess that there's been about 250 contestants so far?  They just began season 13 and there's anywhere from 15 to 20 contestants per season.

What I want to know is this: How many contestants have kept their weight off?

There was a Biggest Loser reunion show a few weeks ago where they highlighted a few old contestants who of course have kept their weight off.  The common theme that I noticed with these featured contestants was that their weight loss was either very recent or they had somehow made their healthy lifestyle part of their income stream.  Yep, they were either working as personal trainers or selling some kind weight loss product (Brita water bottles) or eating plan (Biggest Loser meals).  They have sponsors.  They are workin' it.  They have some serious accountability (cha-ching!) to keep the weight off.

But what about the other approximate 200 or so contestants.  What's happened to them? Have they maintained their weight loss?

So, Santa, if you're reading this....I've been a very good girl.

PS: I'm having a slight weigh-in crisis.  I saw 148 lbs on the scale! Either my scale is officially dying or my Christmas week of poor food choices has caught up with me.  Sigh.

  1. Can I add my signature to that petition for the full follow up spreadsheet? I'd love to see all those figures - not just the ones who's being paid to stay fit... But maybe that's the reason we have never been presented with one by the producers of the show: they actually did NOT keep their weight off... I wonder what a comprehensive Google search of all contestant names would bring up... Anyone with a couple of spare hours out there? We'd like to know the results ;)

  2. I have a WW scale too, and it acts cranky as well-- AND I saw a horrible number yesterday morning... bleh.
I'll bet if your weight is up (for realz) that if you just get back to your tighter program, you will be back down within a matter of days.
Good luck, I'm with you in the 'fight.'

  3. If I know you and I think I do, you will have that number back down in no time flat! Happy New Year! I also would be curious to know this as well, I have to admit I have never watched this show!

  5. yeah, I read an article was in a magazine about all the "failures"...I understand they have to spin the positive for the show...I mean we all watch to buy into that dream that if we just want it bad enough or work hard enough, then we can do it..."the old fashioned way"...yet we know statistically, most of them are doomed. Wow, that sounds negative hahah

  6. I always wonder about past contestants and what happened to them... you know how you always have a favorite 2 or 3 people each season... Hmmmm, good thoughts!!

  7. I have to think the reason we haven't heard of them is because they haven't kept their weight off, other than the ones who have made it part of their job as you've said.

The rest of the 200...well, they probably are yet again back where they were or maybe not quite as far, but they are struggling. I read somewhere ... I wish I could remember where and if this were a true statistic or not, but 97% of people with more than 100 lbs to lose cannot sustain the loss without surgical help. I'm sure this is more of a 5 yrs out statistic or something and like I said, I don't know if it's true or not.

As for your gain, it's not your official weigh in yet anyway so don't freak yet! : ) I would bet it's sodium from the holidays. *hearts*

  8. I was just talking to Ronnie this morning about wanting a show about maintenance. I know it isn't flashy or exciting, but it would be real!

  9. I remember reading a few years ago about past contestants who have gained all if not most of their weight back. Even previous season winner gained all but 30 lbs of his weight back.

  10. Good lord, I would WATCH an episode of BL where they showed who hadn't kept it off. :/

Sadly, don't think that will ever happen.

  11. I wonder the same thing. I don't think I could maintain that level of deprivation/intensity for long.
