Are You Addicted to Food?

I know for an absolute fact that I am addicted to food and have been for most of my life.  No surprise there, right?

I just found a recent addictions survey over on Obesity Help that was really eye-opening for me.  They surveyed pre-op and post-op weight loss surgery patients.  Go check it out.  There's a lot of talk about cross addictions in the survey too. One statistic that I've seen more than once is that approximately 30% of weight loss surgery patients will cross addict to another drug or behavior.

Speaking of cross addictions, let's talk about alcohol, mmmkkay?

I've never really been much of a drinker.

Sure there were a few random crazy alcohol induced moments that I can barely remember from the college years, but other than that, my drug of choice was always food.  Hey, it's cheaper and tastes better.  Why buy one cocktail for $7 when you can get an entire half gallon of ice cream for $3?  Seriously.

Thinking back to BOOBs 1.0 last year, I can remember that I had one, yes ONE alcoholic beverage the entire weekend.

Anywhoozle, I have noticed that in the last six to eight months or so that I am more likely to order a drink when I'm out to eat or enjoy a cocktail at friends' houses.  Even though I almost always only have only one drink, this is definitely a new phenomenon for me.  Probably a "non-issue", but it still has got me thinkin'.

Are you addicted to food?  Have you noticed any cross-addictions creeping into your life?

  1. Shopping. My husband has become well aware of the fact that if I am stressed, and really want to eat but know that I shouldn't, that I will go shopping. Or random packages will start appearing at the house after an internet-shopping binge. I am really trying to curb both behaviours (eating and shopping), but it is hard!

    2) Totally addicted to food. There's no other reason for me to be full/satisfied/not hungry, and still go buy and eat a candy bar. NONE. *sigh*

Jk but it does makes you go hmmm......

  6. It started as something minor when I was doing my pre-op diet...just a hobby. But, now, I'm pretty sure it's safe to say I'm addicted to nail polish. Not huffing it or anything! Just addicted to buying it and doing all sorts of crazy things with my nails. I never used to care about my nails and owned maybe 10-15 shades of nail polish. The stockpile is now up over 90 (yes, I just counted). I find resisting the temptation to buy a bottle of nail polish at a drug store just as hard as I've previously found resisting the temptation to order dessert. But, this addiction's much healther :)

  8. Yep- I am addicted to food and shopping. Internet shopping and Target is my shopping of choice. I will spend until I am out of money, then I have to be on a money diet until I build it back up again. It sucks.

  9. I will have go over and look at that quiz. I am not an addict of any sort, really, though: I just am too afraid to hurt myself. HOwever: I do drink more than I did prior to the band-- but it amounts to one drink a day, typically at dinner time, and I have it to literally calm down my band-- usually during the week.
So, hmmmm. But that was actually recommended to me by Dr. Ren, so hmmm again.
I keep thinking one of these days that I'll go in for an UNfill-- I am probably a bit too tight if I am 'medicating' myself with a glass of wine or a martini to loosen the band a bit at night.

  10. Food. Writing. If I see a pen and paper ... I must be writing, doodling, doing this little criss/cross thing (that my mom does). Food. NPR. Food.

  13. I am a food addict, compulsive overeater, binge eater for sure. And I do shop a lot.(I buy home decor) I'm hoping since I have jump started my weight again that I will get interested in buying clothes. Really cute clothes!

As for alcohol. I haven't really ever been a big drinker. But I have definitely had my share of Bailey's and Mudslides. I would probably still be drinking them now but those damn things are loaded with sugar and calories.

I love the comment about why pay $7.00 for a drink when you can buy a gallon on icecream for $3.00. Ain't that the truth. lol
