I Bite It, I Write It...or do I?

First of all, thank you for your feedback about fluoros...it's so interesting to see how each surgeon's practice has so many different rules.

Anyways, onwards to today's topic!

For over a month now, I have NOT been writing down what I am eating...AKA "Journaling" my food.

I'm not sure how or why I stopped journaling, I just stopped.  Journaling was a HUGE key to my weightloss.

But now there are no more little post-it notes floating around in my purse, car, desk, etc.

I even have the new iphone now which I could probably use to journal.  But I don't.

Should I be concerned that I may be slipping back into my old bad behaviors?

I don't think so, because:
  • I still am keeping a running tally in my head daily of calories and protein grams.
  • My weight has stayed pretty steady...just below my 145 lb goal weight.
  • Food is no longer the focus of my life.  WOW, that's a big statement worth repeating.  Food is no longer the focus of my life.  I remember in my fatty days, I would be enjoying a meal and already thinking what I would eat at my next meal...I was always thinking "what can I eat next?"  Now I don't really think about food until I am hungry.
I've also slipped back into having a protein shake each day or every other day...just because it's easy, quick, and don't have to plan.  Shakes are my easy "go-to" food when I am busy.

What are your thoughts on journaling ?  Do you do it?

PS: Are you ready for Workout Wednesday tomorrow?  Post those pics!  I know I will.

  1. I will not be working out tomorrow as I have an appt. at my doctors at 8:30 a.m. (He is 100 miles away from me) and then we are visiting my father in law and will be home Thursday Afternoon. I did exercise this morning AND I am going back tonight for a spin class.

I use myfitnesspal on my iphone for my food journaling. It really helps me stay focused.

  2. I started journaling after reading this blog. I try to journal daily. If I don't journal I do keep a running tally in my head that I write down at the end of the day.

Sometime I feel my journaling is in vain...especially when I don't know the caloric value of foods I cook at home.

I think journaling is very important. It holds me accountable for the good and the bad that I put into my mouth. I makes me look back and say, "why did you eat that?"

You have arrived to place where food no longer rules who you are. I think it is okay that you no longer journal everything you place in your mouth. You know what goes in has to come out in exercise. I believe you will never go back to the "before" days.

  3. I didn't journal most of the time I was losing, but when I hit a plateau in January, I started again and have continued since. My thought is that since you are maintaining your weight loss, you don't need to write things down. If that changes, you'll know what to do.

  4. I always journal. It's become a security blanket of sorts because I know if I don't, I'll sneak in things I should not have. I'm still struggling with getting in exercise on a regular basis though.

  5. I just can not make myself journal my food! I guess if I got to a place where my weight loss completely stalled I would try to for a week or so just to see if that is something that needed to be addressed, but I have never been able to do it for more than a couple days at a time.

  6. I am not a fan, but I will do it every once in a while to get back on track. Seems like in your case, you know exactly which foods work for you and how much you should have each day == you have so much practice, you might not really need it anymore. Not thinking about food is so awesome!!!! I love this about the band.

  7. I'm a bit naughty - I haven't journalled at all. I don't even know what my daily calories would be.. I dod speak to my surgeon about it - cause I felt guilty about not doing it - he said as long as the scale was going down and I was choosing healthier options to keep going as I am. He did say that if I hit a plateau I may need to start keeping an eye on things.

I must admit journalling = dieting in my brain and I don't want to feel like I am on a diet.

  8. Honestly, if you are maintaining your weight without journaling, then you are my hero and I have hope for that possibility in my future! To me, THAT is living. Right now, in the losing phase, I have to diligently journal or I don't lose.

  9. Just posted my pic and I don't journal. It overwhelmes me and I don't need added stress. I do however keep up mentally with what I have eaten. If I stall out for a while I will probablt start the food journal back up.

  10. SO GLAD that you started following my blog or I wouldnt have found you! You now have a dedicated fan in me! :) I didnt see the point in journaling when I first started all of this UNTIL I took a look back 1 year later. I did not think that I had made major changes BUT MAN!!! Did I ever!
I still continue to struggle with keeping up daily and my dietician would prefer that I maintain so that she can have a good idea about where I am at but its so tough. I go through phases now despite knowing how great it is to look back on, the feeling of being accountable every time you put something in your mouth and the ability to monitor habits over the short-term. I will continue to struggle but do my best.
    Keep it up!
