Does Anybody Have an iBand?

No.  It's not another brand of gastric band or an iPhone app.

It's a new surgical procedure that's being done when a new Lap Band is placed around the stomach.  It's called iBand.  Or more officially it's called "Imbricated Lap Band Procedure."

This procedure takes the Lap Band to the next level.

The surgeon not only places the Lap Band at the top of the stomach, but also makes the stomach below the band smaller by folding the stomach inwards and suturing the stomach walls together.  Almost like a gastric sleeve without the cutting of the stomach.

If you want to see a cute cartoon on what the procedure looks like, click HERE.

If you want to see a surgeon, Dr. Adam Smith (who is banded himself), talk about the iBand procedure, click HERE.  The best thing about the entire interview is the comment that Dr. Smith makes about accountability.  Me likey.

Here's Dr. Smith showing off his weight loss.  Another successful bandster!
Do you have an iBand? I want to know

  1. I had never even heard of this before today! Needless to say, I don't have an iBand.

  2. My surgeon has had the plication (folding part) of this procedure, and he is evaluating its use for his patients (gotta love a doc that tests things on himself first!). He said it may be possible down the track to add this to my band to assist in weight loss. We will see!

  4. My friend at work is having this done on the 17th. Our insurance doesn't pay for it...will only pay the lap band part. Her surgeon is doing the othet part for free...because he is doing a study. Her surgeon has only done 1 of these! I am scared for her.

  7. I've heard of this, well, not the band bit but the sewing the stomach bit. It's called a gastric wrap in the UK, not sure if there is a band too. Interesting though.

  8. This is the first I've heard of this! So happy that you share all this new surgical information with us thank you! I too liked the part about him being more an authority for accountability. I also like that he talked about the band being the catalyst for change. That's exactly what it was for me.

  9. It's also called "gastric plication" or a "pleated band" or "anti-slippage procedure" - I know my own bariatric surgeon does them it or without the band and the surgeon I work for is doing the procedure as well - he's done 3 so far (does them for free when pt's are having a band put in since it's new and we're studying it). I'm interested to see how the patients do with it....

  10. I love the accountability he talks about. It is very frustrating when people think "it is just the band."
I'll be interested to see where this goes! :)

  12. It is interesting..... I actually had something called a "fundoplication" procedure along with my lap-band..... where they take the top part of the stomach (the fundus) and wrapped it around my esophagus, and then put the band OVER that. I had really bad GERD, and that secondary procedure has completely fixed this. It also rendered my stomach with less "room" for food. The only thing is, that about 1/2 the people who get this cannot vomit.... at all. I am part of that group, I had stomach flu (courtesy of my children) and it was NOT a fun experience. I dry heaved the whole time. I also cannot PB..... I slime it up, stuff gets "stuck" but it never comes back, it HAS to go down, so I have to be that much more careful :)
